About Telisha

My ancestors were with me all along

Leaven began with my relationship with my own lineage. While writing my memoir, I started paying attention to experiences with my ancestors that I had long overlooked. What I once thought were isolated moments revealed themselves as consistent, ongoing relationships. I now know what many faith traditions have always taught: love continues beyond death, those who have passed remain deeply invested in our growth, and we can help the progression of their souls.

I also know that this kind of deep, personal transformation requires the right environment. It rarely happens in crowded rooms; it happens in small circles where people feel fully seen, heard, accepted, and safe to explore.

Holding that space is my life's work. I possess more than twenty-five years of experience designing and leading transformative groups, often building programs from the ground up where none existed before. From founding the first sexual-assault survivor support group in St. John's, Newfoundland, to launching Conscious Connections at The Carter Center, a forum for honest dialogue around race and healing. I know how to guide people through their most vulnerable and vital conversations.

Leaven is all of this kneaded together: the intimacy of the circle, the power of writing, and the steady accompaniment of my ancestors. I offer it so you can rise with yours.

A participant's words

What writing reveals

"Telisha's prompts led me into deep communication with loved ones who have passed, letting me see them through the beauty of their lives and not just the tragedy."

In the end I wrote, or they wrote: "Don't be stingy with this love we have gifted you. Don't waste our sacrifices, rather gain strength, and honor us by asking us for help and carrying on the work."

— Shelley K Rothman

Your ancestors are always with you, and the love between you flows both ways.

From a Gathering, July 2026

"It was a really lovely evening. Thinking back, I'm quite stunned and impressed with how much got done in such a short time. It was strange and jarring to zoom out to look at my ancestry as a whole, but really sweet to zero in on my uncle and feel real love and support flowing both ways.

The writing exercise was the best kind of prayer. Not asking for anything but sending a message across the veil: I'm so proud of you. And then realizing along the way that the things I'm proud of him for are the things that I'm proud of myself for as well. So it does feel like the love and applause was sent both ways."

— Hillary Webb

"It was truly amazing! I even took a course on mediumship back in the 80s and delivered a message for someone, but still didn't trust what was happening.

Last night, it was a feeling and thought transfer. I didn't hear anything and only briefly glimpsed my parents and a few aunts and uncles and grandparents in the beginning, and then thoughts/statements from my dad were just planted in my brain to write down."

— Jeanne DeFlorio
Questions

What people ask before they begin

Which should I start with?
If you're new, the journal is the gentlest way in: one quote and one prompt a day, on your own, whenever you have ten quiet minutes. If you'd rather feel it live before committing to more, book a single session. If you already have people in mind, a Gathering brings Leaven to them. And if you're ready for the full arc, the six-week program is the deepest version of this work. There is no wrong order. Many people keep the journal first and come to the program later.
Do I need to be a writer?
No. Leaven is not a craft class and nothing is graded or critiqued. The writing is a doorway, not a performance. If you can write a letter, you can do this.
Why writing? What makes it a way to connect with ancestors?
Writing engages the very faculties connection requires. When you write toward someone who has passed, your mind draws on the same networks it uses to remember your life, imagine the unseen, and sense another person's inner world. Decades of research on expressive writing link putting our deepest feelings into words with better mood, less stress, and improved health. And grief science has overturned the old idea that healing means letting go: healthy grief often means keeping a loving, ongoing bond, and writing to those who have passed, then letting them answer, is one of the most direct ways to tend it. Writing is not a metaphor for connection. It is a practice of it.
The research behind it
What happens in a live session?
We gather on Google Meet in a small circle. I open the theme, offer a guided meditation, and share two or three gentle prompts. Then comes quiet, protected writing time, about 30 minutes, followed by sharing for those who wish. No one is ever required to read aloud.
Is this therapy?
No. Leaven is an educational and spiritual program. It is not therapy, counseling, or mental-health treatment, and is not a substitute for professional care. It can sit alongside that care beautifully.
Do I need to share a particular faith?
Leaven is offered through a Baháʼí-inspired lens and draws on prayers and wisdom from many traditions: Christian, Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, Buddhist, Indigenous, and more. Nothing asks you to believe anything in particular or to leave your own faith at the door. Bring what is yours, take what serves your healing, and leave the rest.
Who counts as my ancestors?
Members of your family line, generations back or recently passed, and people you loved who have gone before you, by blood or not. Because the next world is not bound by time or place, even those who lived long ago are near and reachable.
What if I sign up and can't attend?
Reach out. Seats can be transferred to a future session or cohort, and I'll always work with you to find the right answer.
